Sanya's First Summer Surf Sesson of 2011

Surfers in Sanya, Hainan Island, China were treated to an early summer swell this weekend that brought 2-3 foot waves to Dadonghai Beach in what appears to be the first southern swell of the summer season. Though less powerful than the 2-3 meter surf that has graced the East side of the island for the past 6 months, it's always a treat for locals, most of whom live close to Sanya City than Riyue Wan (the most popular of the East coast breaks), to surf at their home beach.

Saturday's offering peaked in the late afternoon from about 3-6pm before the incoming tide filled out the sets rendering them unridable for but a handful of body surfers.

Though far from anything "epic", the arrival of southern swells bringing to the South tip of Hainan Island is always a celebrated occasion for Sanya's surf community, and marks what will hopefully serve as a prelude to a wave-saturated season.

Hainan surf has been decent for the past few days; Sanya surf should be sustained and growing through today, pick the right tide and you'll be golden.

Yesterday's winds have subsided, and though a bit closed out, most exposed beaches will see head high surfable waves.

There is surf out there somewhere today: heavy buoys but steady winds will make it a 'hunt' for anyone trying to surf these conditions.

It's been so flat, it's getting depressing.  I'm starting to doubt the existence of decent surf in Dadonghai.  Bring on winter.
